Alt-country rockers Wilco make their return to the music scene with their latest self-titled release. The follow up to 2007's "Sky Blue Sky" finds the Chicago, IL group still adhering to their distinct formula of country tinged alternative rock that has gradually gained more and more fans over the years.
The album opens with "Wilco (The Song)", an instantly memorable and catchy tune with a wonderful melody sparsed throughout the whole track. The album continues on with "One Wing", a song that exemplifies their distinct country flavored sound with melodic guitars and also shows their versatility within the alternative genre as well. "You and I" is a beautiful and mellow tune that features guest vocals from Canadian singer-songwriter Feist. This song shows the wonderiful harmony between the two artists and adds a little variety to an already stellar and well-rounded album.
Other highlights from the album include the set's first single, "You Never Know", a wonderful tune that best captures the style of the group with frontman Jeff Tweedy's vocals adding beautiful harmony to a already stellar song. "Solitaire" is an authentic, pure, straight up country tune delivered with impeccable precision and wonderful musical accompanient.
My favorite song off the album is "Sonny Feeling", a song that makes you want to smile and dance along and is the perfect compliment to your summer barbecues with its catchy guitar riffs and Jeff's vocals giving the listener a very enjoyable listening experience.
Overall, this is a fantastic album and another fine chapter in the evolution of Wilco. This band has stayed true to their sound from the very beginning and they have not compromised their musical integrity or deviated from their musical journey whatsoever, and have made music on their own terms that people have come to appreciate.
