The Best an Worst Beers in America

Worst Malt Liquor

Malt liquors are brewed specifically to produce high alcohol content, with flavor and quality acting as afterthoughts. What's funny is that other brews-such as pale ales and wheat beers-can be just as alcoholic, and taste much better. Malt Liquor, though, tends to have fewer calories than the other high-alcohol brews. For the best of both worlds (high alcohol, low calorie-although we make no promises about taste), opt for the Miller Magnum.

Worst Light Beer

Light beers generally range from 95 to 110 calories, but the Sam Adams Light contains 124. Kind of defeats the purpose of a light beer, especially when you can choose a regular Guinness Draught for just one more calorie. Choose a true light beer: Beck's contains 60 fewer calories than the Sam Adams (that's almost as little as one-half the caloric impact!).

Worst Ale

The difference between ale and lager is in the brewing-ale is brewed from malted barley using a top-fermenting brewer's yeast, while lager is bottom-fermented. Ales contain hops, a good source of cholesterol-lowering polyphenols, and they tend to be sweet or fruity because of the quick fermentation. We liked the Sam Adams Boston Ale.

Worst Lager

Lagers don't have the same anti-clotting effects that stouts do, but they're generally less caloric, and can be just as tasty. In this case, save over 30 calories by opting for the Yuengling over the Busch Ice. Or, if you trust us, skip the regular lager altogether and choose the Sam Adams Light-it's 15 calories heavier than all other light beers, but it more than makes up for that caloric overload in taste. And when you're comparing it with the heavier regular lagers, you might not even be able to tell the difference!
